It Doesn't Always Have to Be Like This

I love the story in Luke 24 where Jesus walks through a wall and essentially says, “Hey”.

He’s met by surprised faces and agitated nervous systems the likes of which we can only imagine. His response to that? "Handle me”. I’m real. Touch me.

Still not convinced? I’ll eat in front of you. “Have you any food here?”

He has an effortless way of passing through our walls, breaking through the self-protection we keep running up against. He’ll hit hard or knock pretty gently - it just depends on the severity of our illusion. There’s no out without Him.

It doesn't always have to be like this.

I think that’s what He’s been telling us.

He’s not uncomfortable making Himself real to you. He really wants to. He’ll eat a fish in front of you - just to make His point. In the story He’d just floated through a wall, I don’t think He needed more energy. But His resurrected body was still a real body. And that’s what He needed His disciples to see. All of this, all of Him - it’s real.

He’s not uncomfortable making Himself real to you.

What if Someone broke through the wall you kept running up against and told you, "it doesn't always have to be like this"?

I had to bring (and am bringing) to Jesus all the parts of me still not convinced He’s enough.

I had to stop nodding my head like I understood things I didn’t.

Do we see the mercy of God in our hunger? Do we thank Him for our agitation? Do we see His graciousness in every thing, every day, that convinces us we can’t afford life without Him? That there is no life without Him? Apart from Him we're alone losing a war, losing everything to the artificial.

Jesus walked through the walls of my grief and said “Handle me”.

Touch me. I'm real.

There is no out without Jesus.

And what’s most startling? What's so refreshing?

He’s the only Person in the whole wide world who's never been pretending.

"Why are you troubled? And why do

doubts arise in your hearts?

Behold My hands

and My feet for it is I Myself.

Handle Me and see …"

Luke 24:38-39
